ChatGPT expands its advertising tools
Sponsored Agents enter testing as OpenAI expands campaign tools. What the announcement and Shopify listing say about access, measurement, and commercial influence.
OpenAI's September 16 advertising announcement brings business-sponsored conversations and more campaign tools into ChatGPT. For readers, the central question is how clearly commercial persuasion remains separated from independent assistance. For businesses, the practical questions are access, measurement, and data use.
What OpenAI announced
OpenAI says it is testing Sponsored Agents with selected advertisers in the United States. After clicking an ad, a user can choose a conversation with a business-sponsored agent. The company says that conversation is clearly labeled and separate from both its independent answers and the user's original conversation.
The announcement also describes campaign creation and analysis through an Ads Manager plugin, AI-assisted creative tools, and integrations with HubSpot and Shopify. OpenAI says US Shopify merchants can use the integration now, with expansion to other supported markets planned for September 23. That later date is a rollout plan, not confirmation of access today.
What the Shopify listing adds
The ChatGPT Ads listing in Shopify's App Store describes catalog-based ad creation, inventory synchronization, and campaign measurement using a Shopify pixel and conversion events. It identifies OpenAI as the developer. Its listed launch date is September 3, so today's announcement should not be read as the app's first appearance in the store.
The listing also discloses access to customer and store data, including browsing activity, product information, and marketing or analytics features. Those permissions are worth reviewing alongside the convenience of connecting a campaign tool. The listing is product documentation, not independent evidence that campaigns will perform well.
Our suggestion for anyone evaluating the channel: define the outcome you want to measure before treating clicks as a business result. Check the reporting, product claims, and landing page as carefully as the generated creative. We have not tested campaign performance and are not making an earnings claim.
The boundary to watch
Our view: the sponsor's identity and commercial purpose should remain obvious throughout the interaction, including follow-up questions. A persuasive conversation should not acquire the authority of neutral advice simply because it happens inside a familiar assistant.
These are questions to evaluate as the experience develops, not findings that a particular safeguard has failed. We want useful tools and clear accountability for how they influence people's choices.
