Privacy Policy

You can reach the operator through Contact for privacy questions and requests.

ChatGPT Fan is an independent publication. Here is what this site stores and where information goes.

On your device

Your browser remembers read headlines, saved stories, your analytics choice, and whether you have followed the campaign’s “Read & sign” link. Following that link stops future automatic invitations for this campaign in this browser until you clear site storage; it does not tell us whether you signed. A session preference prevents the invitation repeating as you browse, including in Safety & Society. Saved stories stay on this device. Site search runs locally. Clearing this site’s browser storage removes these preferences.

Contact messages

The contact form sends your email, message, selected topic, and optional name to Formspree, which processes the submission for the site owner. We use these details to read and respond to your request. Contact messages are not newsletter subscriptions.

You can use Contact to ask about a message you sent or request its deletion. Avoid including passwords or other sensitive information. Formspree’s privacy policy describes its processing.

Optional analytics

For visitors identified as being in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or Switzerland, Google Analytics loads only after you choose “Allow analytics.” Elsewhere, it loads automatically unless you have opted out or your browser sends a privacy signal. If we cannot determine your country, analytics stays off unless you enable it in Analytics settings. When active, Google processes usage information such as page visits, device/browser information, and outbound link events. Analytics cookies can recognize returning browsers.

When analytics is enabled, our configured events measure page visits, outbound destination domains, successful contact submissions, and campaign invitation interactions (shown, dismissed, details, or referral). These interactions do not tell us whether anyone signed a petition. Signatures are handled on the organizer’s website; we do not collect them. We exclude message contents, email addresses, names, search terms, URL query strings, and fragments from those events. Google advertising signals and ad personalization are disabled.

You can decline or withdraw consent through “Analytics settings” in the footer. Withdrawal stops this integration and removes accessible first-party Google Analytics cookies; it cannot undo data already received by Google. Google’s privacy policy explains its processing. Your choice is remembered for up to six months on this browser.

Regional analytics settings

When no analytics choice is saved and no browser opt-out signal is present, we request your approximate country from Country. This service receives your IP address as part of the request; we send no cookies or page referrer. We use only the country code and temporarily cache it in session storage for five minutes. We do not store the returned IP address. Country states that it does not log requests. This lookup does not request access to your device’s precise location. A VPN may change the country detected.

Browser privacy signals

We treat Global Privacy Control and a browser Do Not Track setting of “1” as a request to keep our Google Analytics integration off, even if this browser previously allowed analytics. These signals do not prevent requests needed to load the site or external preview images. We do not sell personal information or use it for targeted advertising.

Hosting and external content

The hosting provider may process request logs. News images load from publishers’ image servers, which receive ordinary requests including your IP address. External links follow those sites’ policies. Fonts and the site’s own artwork are served with this site. On GitHub Pages, GitHub processes technical request information under its privacy statement. Google, Formspree, our email provider, and image hosts may process information on servers outside your country. Those providers may be able to associate requests with other information they hold; their policies explain their own practices.

Retention and requests

Contact messages are stored in Formspree and the operator’s email account. We retain them for handling the inquiry, necessary follow-up, and any applicable legal obligations; they are not deleted automatically when this page is closed. Provider backups and technical logs may follow separate retention periods. You can ask to access, correct, or delete information you sent using Contact. We may ask for information reasonably necessary to verify your request. We will explain any applicable limits, including information we cannot identify or must retain by law.

Analytics consent and our Google Analytics cookies are configured for up to six months on this browser; cookie duration is different from Google’s server-side retention. You can clear local preferences in your browser and withdraw optional analytics at any time. Requests and rights depend on applicable law; nothing here limits rights you have under that law.

Changes to this policy

We will post revisions on this page and update its effective date. Material changes will also be announced on the site. If a new use requires your consent, we will request it before that use.
